In emergency situations, every second counts. Being prepared for the unexpected is so important, yet many people never find the time to learn rescue techniques like CPR, first aid, or the Heimlich maneuver. Thankfully for a family out shopping in Diyarbakir,
Turkey, shopkeeper Yusuf Celik knew exactly what to do when their 5-year-old began to choke on a piece of candy on the sidewalk outside of the jewelry store where he works.
Security footage shows the heart-pounding moments when Yusuf grabs the little boy and starts working to dislodge the candy from his throat. A longer version of the video spans the full 52 seconds that Yusuf administered the Heimlich.
Each second feels like an eternity for the viewer, so we can just imagine how it felt to be the child’s mother or sibling as they anxiously watched!
At last, the candy flies from the boy’s throat onto the sidewalk, and the relief is palpable. Yusuf can’t resist giving the lucky boy a kiss on the head before sending him on his way.
So scary! Thank goodness this kind stranger knew just what to do. Watch Yusuf in action in the player below, and don’t forget to share.
