The Unforgettable Story of Patrick Hardison’s Face Transplant

Patrick Hardison’s life was forever changed in 2001 when he suffered devastating burns while attempting to rescue a woman from a house fire. The volunteer firefighter’s injuries were so severe that he was left with third-degree burns on his entire face and scalp, losing his ears, lips, and most of his eyelid tissue.

For years, Patrick struggled to come to terms with his disfigured appearance. He wore a baseball cap, sunglasses, and prosthetic ears in public, but the stares and whispers of strangers took a toll on his mental health. Despite undergoing 71 surgeries, Patrick was still unable to form normal facial expressions and was at risk of slowly going blind.

However, in 2015, Patrick’s life took a dramatic turn when he underwent the most extensive face transplant ever performed. The 26-hour surgery, led by Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez, gave Patrick a new face, scalp, ears, and ear canals. The procedure was a high-risk one, with only a 50/50 chance of survival.

Patrick’s journey to the face transplant was not an easy one. After years of struggling to find a donor, his search finally ended when a 26-year-old man named David Rodebaugh was declared brain dead following a bike accident. David’s mother, Nancy Millar, made the selfless decision to donate her son’s face, giving Patrick a second chance at life.
