What to Know About the Plane Crash near Washington, DC – The First Major US Commercial Aviation Disaster Since 2009

A tragic midair collision near Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025, has led to a massive search-and-rescue operation in the freezing Potomac River. The crash, the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2009, involved an American Airlines flight and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport.

The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. when American Airlines Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ700, collided with the Black Hawk during a routine training exercise. CCTV footage captured a fiery explosion as both aircraft plunged into the river.

Rescue teams are battling freezing temperatures, ice, and difficult water conditions. As of Thursday, 28 bodies have been recovered, but no survivors have been found. The recovery operation is challenging due to the river’s depth and harsh conditions.

Families of those on board, including several U.S. figure skaters, are devastated. Many are waiting for news at Reagan National Airport, where grief counselors have been made available.
