Shania Twain stood backstage, the weight of the spotlight just beyond the curtain pressing down on her. The crowd roared, chanting her name, but her heart wasn’t in it tonight. Not since the letter arrived.
It had been a cold, ordinary Tuesday when she opened the envelope—the one with the faded postmark and her mother’s shaky handwriting. Sharon Twain hadn’t been well for years, but the words still hit like a freight train: “It won’t be long now.”
Shania had canceled shows before, but not this time. Her mother had insisted. “The music doesn’t stop for anyone, baby,” she’d whispered over the phone, her voice thin but firm.
So here Shania stood, guitar in hand, forcing a smile as the intro to “You’re Still the One” began. But as she opened her mouth to sing, the words caught in her throat. The melody was theirs—the song she and her mom had harmonized to in their tiny Ontario cabin, back when dreams were just whispers and money was tight.
The first note cracked. Then the second. The crowd hushed, sensing something wrong. Shania gripped the microphone, tears spilling over.
