This marks an unprecedented escalation in local enforcement of immigration policy, with Tennessee becoming the first state to use the National Guard so openly in deportation raids.
The Governor’s office issued a brief statement, saying: “We are upholding the rule of law and protecting Tennessee citizens. The Guard is assisting federal efforts to remove individuals who are in the state unlawfully.”
