There were speeches, tributes, and music at the service, which made it both serious and symbolic. Supporters said Kirk was a strong voice for young conservatives and that he built a movement that went beyond college campuses and into the heart of national politics.
One thing that stood out among all the other things that happened that day was that the podium was surrounded by bulletproof glass. This strange action got a lot of attention right away on social media and in the news.
People who watched said that these kinds of safety measures are not common at indoor memorials. The sight of a protective shield made people even more worried about political violence in America today, especially after Kirk’s death.
For some people who were there, the glass barrier stood for strength and safety. It showed that even though they were sad, the community was determined to carry on Kirk’s work without fear.
