College, medical school, residency—each step a proof, in my mind, that her efforts had been worthwhile. At my graduation, I searched the crowd for her face. There she was, sitting quietly near the back, clapping softly, her eyes shining with pride. When she hugged me afterward, I brimmed with confidence, feeling on top of the world. I couldn’t resist a remark laced with arrogance. “See?” I said, laughing. “I made it.
