Cyst On My Back

Discovering a cyst on your back can be surprising and sometimes concerning, especially if it seems to appear suddenly or begins to grow in size. In many cases, these lumps are harmless sacs filled with fluid, keratin, or other material that develop beneath the skin. They can vary in size from very small bumps to larger, more noticeable growths and may remain unchanged for years.

Most back cysts are known as epidermoid or sebaceous cysts. They often form when skin cells become trapped under the surface instead of shedding normally. While many cysts cause no pain, they can become irritated by clothing, pressure, or repeated friction. Signs of inflammation may include redness, tenderness, swelling, or drainage of a thick, sometimes foul-smelling substance.

Although cysts are usually benign, it is important to monitor any changes. A lump that grows rapidly, becomes painful, changes color, or shows signs of infection should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. In some cases, what appears to be a cyst could be another type of skin condition that requires medical attention and proper diagnosis.

Treatment depends on the size, location, and symptoms of the cyst. Small, painless cysts may not require any treatment at all, while larger or infected cysts may need to be drained or surgically removed. Avoid squeezing or attempting to pop a cyst at home, as this can increase the risk of infection and scarring. If you notice a persistent lump on your back, consulting a healthcare provider is the best way to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
