For months, I believed I was helping my twin brother Ryan and his wife Melissa finally have the family they had spent years dreaming about. After two failed IVF attempts and a heartbreaking loss, they asked me to become their surrogate, and I said yes without hesitation. I was 36, a single mother raising my seven-year-old son Gabriel, and I understood how deeply they wanted a child of their own. Throughout the pregnancy, Ryan and Melissa attended every appointment, prepared a beautiful nursery, bought tiny dresses, and celebrated every moment with us. Three days later, Ryan came to my house, and I demanded the truth. He explained that the doctors had mentioned surgery, therapy, braces, and years of specialists, and he felt completely overwhelmed. But then he finally admitted the secret he had been hiding for months: he had lost his job four months earlier and had been pretending to go to work every morning while actually sitting in a coffee shop applying for jobs. The nursery had been paid for with credit cards, their savings were gone, and Melissa knew nothing about their financial situation. When Ryan saw the baby’s diagnosis, he convinced himself that it gave him an escape.
