About a month after buying my house, a teenage boy knocked on my front door and politely asked if I needed someone to mow my lawn for the summer. He looked around fifteen and carried an old push mower with him. He explained that he and his mother lived in a nearby trailer park and that he was trying to earn some money before school started. I felt sorry for him and hired him on the spot. He worked hard, never complained, and I usually paid him a little extra. Still, there was something strangely familiar about his face. I was certain I had seen him somewhere before, but I couldn’t remember where.
Everything seemed normal until one afternoon when I arrived home much earlier than usual. His lawn mower was sitting in the backyard, still running, but he was nowhere to be found. I walked around the house calling his name before suddenly seeing him come running out of my garage. Confused, I asked how he had gotten inside. He simply said the door had been open and that he had gone inside for a minute because it was too hot outside. His answer immediately made me uncomfortable. I had owned the house for only a month, but I had never even used the garage. It was always locked, and I knew I hadn’t left it open that day.
A few days later, I saw the boy again while shopping at the grocery store. This time, however, he looked completely different. Instead of his worn-out clothes, he was dressed in expensive designer clothing, and his sneakers appeared to cost more than everything I had paid him that summer. I quietly followed him through the store until he walked outside and crossed the parking lot toward a brand-new black SUV. I watched in disbelief as he climbed into the passenger seat. Something clearly wasn’t adding up. When I approached the vehicle and knocked on the window, the boy looked directly at me. The moment he recognized me, his expression changed, and the SUV suddenly pulled away.
I hurried to my car and followed the SUV through several streets, desperate to understand what was happening. After a few minutes, it turned into a quiet neighborhood and stopped outside a large, beautifully maintained house. The boy stepped out, and an older man came running toward him. I was about to get out of my car when I noticed something that made my heart drop: the man was holding an old photograph. I recognized the photograph immediately—it showed the previous owner of my house standing beside a much younger version of the boy. Suddenly, the strange questions, the locked garage, and the teenager’s mysterious behavior began to make sense. He hadn’t asked to mow my lawn simply to earn money. He had a much more personal reason for wanting access to my property—and what I discovered next completely changed the way I saw the house I had just bought.
