What started as an ordinary Sunday evening of outdoor play ended in heartbreak for the family of 5-year-old Zaria Miller. She had been playing outside with her brothers near Bahia Vista Street, close to Sarasota Christian School, when a sudden accident shocked the community.
The Accident
Just after 6:00 p.m., Zaria and other children approached a culvert—a tunnel-like structure that channels rainwater underground. Heavy water flow, likely worsened by recent rain, pulled her into the storm drainage system. Within moments, she disappeared, swept away by the powerful current.
Emergency responders later confirmed that the water carried her roughly 100 yards through underground pipes before she could be rescued.
Risky Rescue Efforts
First responders from the Sarasota County Fire Department arrived quickly. Assistant Fire Chief Tim Dorsey described the operation as “highly dangerous and complex.” He explained, “This was far from a routine call. There’s a tremendous amount of danger due to unpredictable water flow and the confined space.”
